Yesterday, the EU recommended Apple to make its products better interoperable with third-party accessories by making accessible AirDrop/AirPlay, notifications, audio switching and Wi-Fi sharing, among other features, to other companies. It also wants Apple to increase transparency to developers. Apple is fighting back, citing security as a major problem for this and saying that "the security risks would be substantial and virtually impossible to mitigate". This is, however, a recurring argument, mentions Meta (one of the companies who want to be compatible with Apple's products). Meta and other companies who want to be compatible with Apple now need to give feedback by the 9th (exactly three weeks from now), and everything will be finalized by March. If Apple remains incompliant, the EU might investigate and might fine the company $39 billion (a tenth of Apple's current revenue). The legal document for the EU can be viewed at https://digital-markets-act.ec.europa.eu/document/download/8f28e456-5bd4-4b33-af95-b9f52aeb8a03%5Fen?filename=DMA.100203%20-%20Overview%20of%20proposed%20measures.pdf (I couldn't access Apple's response white paper).
