Phew! It's been hard keeping track of some Apple news lately, and one thing that has zoomed right past my attention since last Tuesday has been the release of a new $150 Beats Pill speaker. The device brought back the Beats Pill, ignored since 2015's Pill+ and discontinued in 2022. For months it has been teased, often in the form of stars like LeBron James being seen wearing it with the help of its new lanyard feature. Anyway, let's learn about its new features!

First, let's look at the outward design. It is pretty long with very rounded corners (dimensions are a bit larger but 10% lighter at 24 ounces), and it is housed by soft silicone, making its clear sound via a metal speaker grille with a metal Beats 'b' logo on it. On the top lies a few buttons for controlling playback and sound (power for, well, power, plus Siri and other miscellaneous controls, volume + & -, and a center button for playback and using new speaker pairing features with the volume + & - buttons), and a removable color-matched lanyard is connected via the left side (the new USB-C feature, supporting wired lossless and charging of other devices, is on the back, although it stays black whatever color you choose). Oh, and speaking of colors, the three colors are Matte Black, Statement Red (interesting and does-what-it-says-on-the-tin name), and Champagne Gold.

Next, the inward features. 90% more air volume is displaced compared to 2015's Pill+ (honestly, since that was so long ago, Beats could have went even farther here) with the help of more powerful magnets in the single woofer, while a single tweeter minimizes distortion compared to two previously found in the Pill+ (both the woofer and the tweeter are aligned 20 degrees for better projection as well). Two Pills can be paired up to amplify sound with two new modes: Amplify (for a bigger sound) and Stereo (for AirPods-like left and right sound channels). Devices connected to your Beats Pill can pass the speakerphone function over to the Pill as well, with the added features of voice isolation and full duplex, and whatever voice assistant the device connected uses, the Beats Pill will also use it.
