January 5th marked the 25th birthday of the iconic Dock (originally announced at the January 5, 2000 Macworld Expo), and to celebrate, let's go behind the scenes into the life of the person who originally got the idea for the dock. And it wasn't Steve Jobs! Like to hear what it is...?
... It is James Thomson (PCalc developer)! James Thomson's first big app was called DragThing (a very weird name, so to speak, and an app with Dock-like basic function and sections for "Applications", "Tools", and "Folders"), and this app got so much attention that Apple recruited him, eventually to work on the icons that are now the Dock. He eventually was forced to move from his home of Ireland to Apple Infinity Loop or get fired, and he so didn't want to that he resigned from Apple, which meant that he never stayed at Apple long enough to make the final version in Mac OS X (which someone else polished up).
Anyway, because of Thomson, the Dock exists and still exists today for its 25th anniversary. Bye, and happy Dock adventures!
