Yesterday, I reported on the announcement of the Let Loose event, to come on May 7. Today, I figured that the announcement of the Let Loose event is perfect timing to talk more about what's rumored for the event. First, iPads. The iPad Air and iPad Pro are both expected to be updated at the event.
For the iPad Air, we'll not get much more than a chip upgrade to M2 (I know, it should be M3, but multiple sources have said that it will be the M2, so we can be almost sure about it), if you're only talking about the 10.9" current size. There'll be a 12.9" version, potentially with mini-LED (several sources have corroborated the mini-LED rumor, but Ross Young, the one with the initial rumor of the mini-LED display, two days ago said no, with an expectation towards the end of the year for a 12.9" iPad with mini-LED (although that rumor seems suspicious)). The 12.9" Air price has not been rumored, but it's safe to guess that it will be $699.
For the iPad Pro, we're getting a big update. First and most probable is the OLED display, which would bring darker blacks and other improvements across the board. However, it might trigger a significant price increase over the already-expensive $799/$1,099 prices today. The iPad Pro will also be thinner and powered by the new M3 chip.
Even bigger upgrades will come in accessories. A new Apple Pencil will come with a squeeze gesture feature to bring up functions with squeezes along with haptics, potential Vision Pro compatibility, and Find My support, and a new Magic Keyboard for the new iPad Pros will feature a top made of aluminum for durability and a larger trackpad, amounting in a more laptop-like design. Finally, both Tim Cook and one of the Let Loose event logos hint at announcements in Apple's carbon neutral journey.
Update 5/1/24: The iPad Pro is now expected to feature the as-yet-unannounced M4 chip.
Update 5/6/24: An "Apple Pencil Pro" has leaked in the Japanese version of apple.com. Also, the M4 chip might come with AI features in the spotlight. Finally, both Tim Cook and one of the Let Loose event logos hint at announcements in Apple's carbon neutral journey.
