We've got some strange iOS news today. We got a new build of iOS 17.4.1 (along with the long-awaited macOS and watchOS versions of 17.4.1), but (again!) no one knows what it fixes, and you can't download it like you do other software updates--for this one we'll have to go back to 2014 and download it plugged into a Mac. Good thing that it's only available for people who download the IPSW file to restore or update their iPad/iPhone via Finder or Windows' Apple Devices app (that may be the key to what the update fixes!). The new build number is 21E237, a very slight change from the regular iOS 17.4.1's 21E236. Speaking of software updates, Monday brought (finally!) a macOS version (both Sonoma and aging Ventura (Apple likes to put out security patches for old software after a newer version is released)) of iOS 17.4.1, coming with the announcement (finally, again!) of what iOS 17.4.1 fixes, which includes a WebRTC and CoreMedia patch for flaws that could both "lead to arbitrary code execution" while processing an image. The macOS version fixes these same things as well as unrecognized external display USB hubs, unexpected quits for Java-included apps, and copy protected Audio Unit plug-ins for professional music apps not passing validation or opening. Another piece of news about Apple software updates is that we now know that iOS 17.4 brought Qi2 charging (Qi2 is MagSafe, but not limited to Apple's ecosystem, and it's backwards-compatible with the older Qi) for the iPhone 12, previously a feature only for the iPhone 13 and newer. Bye, and time to plug into your Mac and start updating (by the way, it's still 2024)!
